Direct and Indirect Services to Students
Direct Services
Direct services refer to the face-to-face interactions between the counselor and the students. We are practicing direct services when we have one-on-one counseling sessions, group counseling sessions, mediations, and in class counseling lessons.
Indirect services
Indirect services are the services we provided behind the scenes on behalf of the students. We believe we provide a voice to the students where the students are not present. We collaborate and consult with administrators, principals, parents, etc. on behalf of the students. This also includes referrals to services outside the realm of the school.
Direct and Indirect Services (Specified)
Listed below are the specific components of our indirect and direct services that we provide to students and families.
Instruction (Direct)
Our school counseling program will come into the classrooms in order to teach the school counseling curriculum. We also provide instruction within our individual and group counseling sessions. We use the ASCA Student Mindsets and Behaviors to create curriculum that teaches the importance of positive mindsets and behaviors. Our goal through instruction is that students will learn the importance of courage, gratefulness, and forgiveness to be successful in school and in life.
Appraisal (Direct)
Through the process of appraisal, our counseling department works with the students to determine their interests, skills and achievements. The purpose of this process is to help the students establish realistic goals that they will actually be interested in pursuing. We want to help the student know who they are and who they want to be. Students will work with counselors to analyze assessments and test scores to discover their interests and strengths.
Advisement (Direct)
Our school counseling department uses advisement to help the student make decisions based on the appraisal process. We aim to assist and advise students when they are making decisions about their future. We want every student to be as successful as possible. In order to do this, we walk alongside students while they are with us by providing them with opportunities that foster interests towards their futures.
Counseling (Direct)
Our school counseling department wants to walk with our students through the ups and downs of middle school. We provide short-term counseling services to help students get through their days and keep moving forward. At our school, the counseling department understands the struggles that comes with being a middle schooler. We aim to provide a warm and inviting environment where students can feel comfortable to confide in us and lean on us when middle school gets difficult and celebrate with us when things are going well.
Consultation (Indirect)
Our school counseling department wholeheartedly believes that we are the advocates of the students. With this in mind, we consult with other relevant departments, programs, and teachers to provide recommendations so that they may meet the needs of the students where the counselor is not able to. We gather information to help support our recommendations.
Collaboration (Indirect)
At Hono'uli'uli middle school, our counseling department teams up with the school staff including administrators, and teachers, as well as the community and businesses outside of campus to establish and achieve shared goals all to benefit the students. We believe in the saying that it takes a village to raise a child. So, we come together as a village to create opportunities to students as well as respond to emergencies to ensure the safety and success of students.
Referrals (Indirect)
Often times students need help that we as school counselors are not able to provide. When this need arises, our school counseling department will collaborate with admin and parents to determine whether outside help is needed or not. Our school counselors will work to get the help that the student needs.
