Define
The Define portion of our school counseling framework covers the standards that both students and school counselors follow. Standards have to do with beliefs, behaviors and skills that are all necessary for success for the student, as well as success for the school counselor and school counseling program.
Vision/Mission Statements
Vision Statement
The vision of Hono'uli'uli middle School Counseling Department is to raise up children to be difference makers every day by providing proper and effective counseling and equal opportunities for education.
Mission Statement
The mission statement of Hono'uli'uli middle school counseling department is to provide an effective school counseling program that teaches courage, gratitude and forgiveness while ensuring positive and equal learning opportunities so that children may grow up to become difference makers.
The ASCA Student standards have three sections: Academic Development, Career Development, and Social/Emotional Development. These three sections help to promote mindsets and behaviors that are positive to the students and creates a setting that is geared towards readiness and perseverance.
Career Development
For the domain of career development, our school counseling program helps students to explore their interests as well as try new things to help them determine potential career paths. Our program also helps students to understand the connection to school and the work force through the teachings of courage, gratitude and forgiveness. We assist them in making decisions that are favorable to help them to be successful in their transition into post-graduation plans.
Academic Development
Our school counseling program helps students within the domain of academic development by targeting the strengths of the child while assisting them while they grow in their weaknesses. Within our program, each child is given an equal opportunity at education no matter the level of learning they are at. We believe that in meeting the child where they are at in their academic development, we can help them to reach their academic goals. We assist in academic planning, production of helpful study habits, and encouragement, as well as other academic skills and behaviors that help the student achieve their goals in academics.
Social/Emotional Development
Our school counseling department assists students in the realm of social/emotional development by teaching skills that would benefit them in the long run. Similarly to academic development, our program meets the students where they are at. Our program will help to promote positive behaviors and mindsets by teaching skills like emotional management/regulation, and communication skills through on-on-one counseling, group counseling, peer mediation, classroom presentations etc.
ASCA Ethical/Professional standards
The ASCA provides ethical and professional guidelines and standards are in place to ensure that the students are having their needs met properly at all times.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is of the utmost importance within the relationship between the counselor and the student. Student privacy is important and must be upheld by the counselor.
Limits to confidentiality
Confidentiality is important but must be broken at times. Listed are the reasons that I will need to break confidentiality:
- If someone is hurting you
- If you are hurting yourself
- If you want to hurt someone
- If the student gives the school counselor permission to share with another trusted adult
If any of these requirements are not met, then confidentiality will be upheld meaning what is said between the school counselor and the student will stay between the school counselor and student.
